Stop by and meet the winemakers, taste their 2016s, sample some food, and tap your toes to live Celtic tunes from Rankin MacInnis and Cassie & Maggie MacDonand!

AND help us with a very important mission: CHOOSE A TIDAL BAY FOR OUR LIST. That’s right, at the end of your tasting vote for your favourite Tidal Bay by private ballot. The Tidal Bay with the most votes goes on our list beginning June 5. There shall be prizes!

2017 Atlantic Canada Wine Symposium!

IMG_0900Nothing gets the wine community buzzing like an exciting, new wine region and Atlantic Canada is fast becoming one of the newest darlings. Boasting unique terroir and exciting, individual wines to match, Atlantic Canada is just beginning its climb to wine stardom.

That’s why we’re super excited for the Atlantic Canada Wine Symposium June 11-13. Now in it’s 5th year the conference feels more timely than ever. It’s aimed at anyone working in the wine industry (anywhere) who want the inside scoop on what’s going on wine-wise in Atlantic Canada – from growing grapes, to making wines, to teaching, serving, selling and talking about wine. Professionals and experts from across the wine world will be in attendance, speaking on the most pertinent topics facing the industry today, from organic and biodynamic farming, to minimalist winemaking, new-wave hospitality challenges and consumer education.

Host Willem Paynter brings the best jazz musicians in Halifax and pairs them with the most knowledgeable staff and best wine list in town (Willem’s words – not ours! *blush*)

Wed, April 19, 8-11pm violin virtuoso Donald MacLennan will whisk you away with his Manouche hot jazz, accompanied by Willem Paynter (bass) and Mike Dalton (guitar). Featured later in the evening will be hot jazz trumpet master James Ervin!

Donald received an ECMA nomination for his debut manouche record “Belleville”, and the lads are giving audiences at Obladee a sneak peak to their showcase performance taking place at the ECMA’s later in the month.

Also this will be Obladee’s frontman Stefan Nielsen‘s last Jazz Night! Stefan has been the stalwart face of Obladee’s staff for many years and we will be very sad to see him go. Friendly, funny, extremely knowledgeable and always on the ball, Stefan was a large part of why the service at Obladee is always top shelf.

National Wine Awards of Canada

I’m thrilled to be judging the 2017 National Wine Awards of Canada with the Wine Align crew in June! And doubly excited these awards will be held in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley!

This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our region to some of the country’s best wine writers, educators and critics. And demonstrate to the rest of the country how far our wines have come!

Registration for entries is now OPEN! And the folks at Wine Align are hoping ALL NS wineries will enter wines in the competition this year! This judge will be doing her best to sniff them out!

Finer Points: Allegrini La Grola, Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre

Every few weeks we feature two special bottles from the cellar and pour them by-the-glass. Here’s what’s currently open!

15 Domaine Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre. Sancerre, Loire, France (100% Sauvignon Blanc) Sauvignon Blanc was born in France’s Loire Valley. And some would say that Sancerre is the benchmark style for the varietal. The Reverdy family has been making wine in the village of Verdigny since the 1500s. Michel Reverdy now farms the 14 hectares of vineyard and crafts the wines himself. The grapes are grown on 30 year old vines in Kimmeridgian Limestone soil comprised of ancient seashells deposited by seas which once covered the area. The vineyards are sustainably farmed. The wine was fermented in stainless steel and aged on its lees for 2-3 months with battonage. A lively nose of chamomile tea, lemon, gravel and fresh herb. The palate is rich with lemon, chalk and peach flavours, bracing acidity and a dry finish.

12 Allegrini La Grola. Valpolicella, Veneto, Italy (90% Corvina, 10% Oseleta) Allegrini has been in Valpolicella since the 1500s. They are amoung a handful of top producers making independent, terroir-focused wines outside of the strict, often limiting Valpolicella DOC laws. Their La Grola vineyard is located in Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella – a south-easterly facing majestic hill thought to be the very origins of the Corvina grape. This wine shows great character and complexity with fruity drinkability from Corvina and deep intensity from Oseleta. Aged 16 mos in oak, and another 10 mos in bottle. A dark wild berry-floral nose with blood orange, fig and espresso. The palate is medium-full and balanced with concentrated, juicy sour cherry notes, fresh herb and a pleasing bitterness. Tannins are soft and integrated.

Host and bassman Willem Paynter is joined by his long-time partner in jazz crimes, tenor saxophonist extraordinaire Martin Davidson. Reining the boys in is the groove master Dave Burton on drums. One of the most experienced musicians in Canada, Dave has all the technique and chops of flashier players but grounds any band he plays in with taste, rhythm and groove. Expect songs by Eddie Harris, Joe Henderson, Stan Getz, and other great sax legends.

Finer Points: Birichino & Rebholz

Every few weeks we feature a couple of special bottles from the cellar and pour them by-the-glass. Here’s what’s currently open:

15 Rebholz Trocken Riesling. Pfalz, Germany. (100% Riesling) Rebholz is the go-to for naturally made, terroir-driven, dry wines in Germany. Certi ed organic since 2009, everything they make today is certi ed biodynamic; everything is dry; everything is estate grown. Hansjorg Rebholz grows his Riesling in red sandstone in the Kastanienbusch vineyard in South Pfalz. This rusty red soil produces some of the greatest dry Rieslings anywhere – not just in Germany. The fruit comes from all of his top vineyards; there are no “lesser sites” designated for the estate blend. The wine is not ltered or ned. This is a lean, clean, salty-nosed Riesling with a richness on the palate offset by brightness and tension. Flavours of yellow plum and citrus dominate with a stern mineral edge.


13 Birichino Besson Vineyard Old Vine Grenache. Central Coast, CA. (100% Grenache) Birichino , meaning “naughty” in Italian, was established by Alex Krause and John Locke. Focusing on old vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains Krause and Locke craft their wines with a light hand. These are lower-alcohol, terroir- driven wines that fall into the natural wine camp. George Besson’s 104 year-old dry-farmed, own-rooted Grenache is grown on a rocky gentle slope bordering the Santa
Cruz Mountains appellation. The wine is made with a small percentage of dried grapes added and fermented with native yeast. It’s aged in neutral French barrels and bottled un ltered. Aromas of cherry liquer, raspberry, spice, fresh herbs and lavender followed by a large-scaled frame but with marked restraint and freshness.

Yes, yes, we know it is not the most serious wine in the world, but who wants to be serious all the time! Tonight we offer the “better” of the Bojo Nouveaus by-the-glass along with live French swing music. It’s a good old fashioned knees-up (no swirling or sniffing of said Beaujolais Nouveau permitted at any time).
