Live Jazz! Willem Paynter with: James Shaw, Trevor Wentzell, Matt Thauvette


Wed, Aug 9, 8-11pm! Maestro James Shaw, the iconoclast Trevor Wentzell + anchor Matt Thauvette will join host Willem Paynter for Jazz Night!

James leads the Vesuvius Big Band, one of the hottest acts in the city, and performs in a multitude of bands throughout Halifax.

Trevor is a Halifax music scene mainstay appearing w/ bands like The Chronos Band, Zimgars and plenty of others.

You may recognize Matt from his gigs with Mo Kenney , Adam Baldwin, Young River … the list goes on!

This promises to be an exciting night with some very experienced young musicians! And it’s FREE!

This Wed, July 26 we’ve got Canadian music legend Mike Murley ! Mike is a 12-time (yep, TWELVE time) Juno winner, and one of Canada’s most celebrated and well-respected jazz artists!

Since moving to Toronto from his native Nova Scotia in 1981 Murley has enjoyed a career that has spanned a wide stylistic spectrum.

Recordings with legendary Canadian artists such as Ed Bickert, Guido Basso, and Rob McConnell showcase the saxophonist’s talents in the mainstream standard repertoire.

On the more contemporary side, Murley has collaborated frequently with the younger generation of improviser/composers including pianist David Braid and guitarist David Occhipinti.

The wildly entertaining Willem Paynter hosts the best musicians – local + abroad – to entertain us all with high-energy, virtuosic performances.

This week, Willem’s award-winning trio featuring Martin Davidson (sax) + Brendan Melchin (drums) return to their stomping ground to play some new killer arrangements, featuring the music of Joshua Redman, Sonny Rollins, Melissa Aldana and Sam Anning.

Live Jazz with Steve Amirault


Wed, June 21, 8-11pm join host Willem Paynter for a special night of live jazz night with Toronto based musical sensation Steve Amirault. This highly accomplished jazz pianist will captivate any audience with his virtuoso technique and intriguing pianistic flare.

Nova Scotia-born, Steve is one of the most accomplished artists in Canada. Coming up on his third anniversary of living in Toronto, the Juno award-winning pianist/vocalist has just released his 6th album,“Hold On, Let Go,” to critical acclaim. A St.F.X. Jazz Studies graduate, Steve’s talents have taken him around the world, where he has shared the stage with the who’s who of jazz. Don’t miss the rare opportunity to hear this fantastic musician.

Live Jazz Hip-Hop Night!


This Wed, June 14, 8-11pm we’ve got Jazz Hip-Hop (yes!) featuring keyboardist extraordinaire Leith Fleming-Smith, drummer Matt Thauvette and bassist/host Willem Paynter.

You may have caught Leith smacking you with a wall of sound on tour with Matt Mayes, Roxy and the Underground Soul Sound or one of the other various bands he plays in. Matt, while not busy touring with Mo Kenny or Adam Baldwin, can be found laying down some of the sickest back-beats in the industry.

Joining the trio will be rapper Keegan Fortune. Expect the music of Anderson .Paak, Questlove, J-Dilla, Jedi Mind Tricks and more. Willem will be playing the elusive electric bass, a first for Obladee! And it’s FREE!

Benjamin Holt is coming all the way from Denton, Texas for Jazz Night! Ben is a monster guitar player who originated in Halifax but has since been called to the Fort-worth area to play in Gospel, Blues, Rock and Jazz bands.

Joining Ben will be Obladee’s jazz host-with-the-most Willem Paynter (bass), and will feature his main accomplices Martin Davidson and Mike Carroll.

This event is FREE and not to be missed!

2017 Atlantic Canada Wine Symposium!
